small town b00m

my hometown of roughly 15,000 people is experiencing unparalleled (compared to most cities its size) boom. Its not part of any metro area. Its, to say the least, in the middle of nowhere, but there are literally dozens of projects going on and tons of new things planned. Pics to come.

EDIT: oh yeah, i would have just waited until I had all the pics but i've been meaning to do this for awhile and i'm getting impatient emoticon

Re: small town b00m

I'm not entirely sure how well this will go over will all these big city skyline buffs but whatever. My parents and I moved to this small town about 70 miles northwest of Milwaukee when I was 3 years old and I just moved to Milwaukee for college after graduating HS in 2005. If I looked back a couple years ago I never would have considered doing this but for a town of 15,000 people, my home town is suddenly experiencing tons of development. Of course considering the size of the town we're not getting any towers but over the last couple years my hometown, whom has been more or less dead, has become home to dozens of new companies and thousands of new people.

This is in part because Wal-Mart of all corporations decided to construct a massive distrubution center just a few miles north of the city. Its almost near completion and will bring 900 new jobs to the city. Pics of this 1.2 million square foot monstrosity will be coming soon. Although I dont have any sources to back this up, I've been told its the largest (Wal-Mart) distrubution center in the midwest.

Due to the construction of said distrubution center, we've attracted multiple chain restaurants, big box retailers and shops which have never been located in our city before. Many businesses also relocated to the north side of the city and several businesses have been redevolped to help keep up with the growth. Because we're such a small town and every other town around us is even smaller than us, our only option was to drive to 30-40 minutes to Madison to get to any good shopping or food destinations.

Keep in mind, this town isnt part of any metro area. Its pretty self dependent.

So here we go. These pics are part 1 in a 3 or so part series. All pics are of new development unless otherwise marked.

more retail development in the same area to come:

A touch of suburbia in the small towns. here are two of the many new subdivisions which add a bit over 6000 new residents to the area. the twisty, hilly neighborhoods may hit close to home to all of you who are strongly opposed to sprawl.

I'm moving this to an additional post so it hopefully wont mess with the width of the page too much. this is the old (nearly dead) mall. there were rumors of Best Buy taking the old Wal-Mart location (bluish, greyish building). I'm not sure if thats still happening. btw sorry for the crappy pano. i dont have a tripod so its kinda tough to be accurate:

Thanks for the photos. Beaver Dam looks like its growing and fast. Sorry, I wasn't able to see one building I liked. They should try and build nice stuff, creative stuff, not just bland tasteless crap.

having grown up there and watched the city slide itself into hell, any development is good development. You can ask any person that grew up there over the last several years. The city is small and full of old people. Nothing new and exciting happened during my childhood but as soon as I move out of town, things start changing. For the most part everything is pretty bland. I'll agree with that. You must understand however that even this bland development is more than I've seen throughout my years spent there. I'd go gather some more pictures but I'd almost rather this thread just die

There's a nice old core to Beaver Dam, its just surrounded by a ring of crap.

It's a lot like Watertown, Jefferson, or West Bend. Well, a smaller version of West Bend.

Beaver Dam isn't a terrible place to live or to just visit.

Thanks again for the photos.
