Re: Bayshore Mall (Suburban MKE )

I like the mall. Well, I'd prefer they fill every storefront downtown with those higher end stores and then build this new mall. That isn't going to happen, so I'm happy with the project. Those lofts look pretty nice. Port Washington Road could become a nice skyline someday. Columbia on the far south side up to the new Bayshore campus. They could fill in the area between with some nice mid rise buildings. Someday...

Re: Bayshore Mall (Suburban MKE )

there is alot of potential on Port Washington. I would like to see them wipe out some of these stripmalls and fast food joints--and 'Bayshoreize' the street. I know the Whitney Gould crowd would hate it--but who cares? Ordinary people dont give a rats ass about architecture--they like to see healthy, clean, and safe streetfronts. The Bayshoreization has already begun to occur across the street from the mall--with the Trostel Sqaure looking Panera/Stans, etc.

Some of these stores wouldnt work downtown. Not now. Maybe after the condo boom has created all the North Ends, City Greens, and First Place on the Rivers. There needs to be something big to bring these whites downtown in terms of retail. It needs an allstar--like an IKEA, Crate and Barrel, Best Buy, or Cabelas. Damn, just imagine if they had built Cabelas on Wisconsin Ave.

Yeah I agree with what you're saying. I hate the current collection of crap shacks that they have now. They're doing an ok job cleaning up Port Washington, but I feel it could be better. I would love in a couple years if they had a nice canopy of trees. Replace the strip malls with a nice collection of stores with possibly apartments or offices above. You could have parking in back and slowly make PW more pedestrian friendly. Make Henry Clay to Silver Spring the priority area. They could try and sell it as the premeir suburban downtown. But keep the store fronts unique. Don't make it look like Disney world, like the mall. Instead, have a cool mix. Some modern, some old style. I just read a Whitney Gould article about how little things add a lot to a neighborhood. I can't help but think it would in the case of Port Washington

Terrifying? No way man....Cabelas would be the absolute best thing to happen to downtown Milwaukee retail in years. Surely, you have heard of the clamour to that place in Richfield--its a destination in itself! Build that in downtown Milwaukee--and it would draw in more people than you would imagine. Yeah, I know it doesnt fit in with urban fabric--but downtown Milwaukee isnt exactly Manhattan or the Chicago Loop. The people who hunt and fish are not so far from downtown. As a matter of fact--there are very many anglers from all walks of life on Lake Michigan--from the inner city to Delafield.

J. Crew coming to Bayshore

Three more stores are coming to Bayshore Town Center in Glendale: J. Crew, Stride Rite and Payless ShoeSource.
J. Crew will occupy 5,458 square feet of space on the west side of Bayshore's town square. New York-based J. Crew Group Inc. has 225 stores in the United States., but only three in Wisconsin (in Madison, Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa and an outlet store at Prime Outlets in Pleasant Prairie).
Stride Rite will occupy 3,067 square feet of space on the south side of Bayshore's town square. The Stride Rite Children's Group Inc., a division of Lexington, Mass.-based The Stride Rite Corp., sells footwear for children. Stride Rite already has stores at Mayfair Mall and Prime Outlets.
Payless ShoeSource Inc. will occupy 1,765 square feet of space on the east side of Bayshore's town square. The Topeka, Kan.-based company has more than 4,500 stores, including several in southeastern Wisconsin.
Last year, Columbus, Ohio-based Steiner + Assoc. completed its expansion of Bayshore Mall into Bayshore Town Center, which now has 1.2 million square feet of retail space, restaurants, office space and residences. Steiner is still working to fill all of the retail space in the expanded shopping center.
"We are excited to continue expanding the offerings at Bayshore with these new retailers," said Bud Schneider, general manager at Bayshore Town Center. "The diverse retailers, restaurants and entertainment components offer a unique experience and provide a reason to keep coming back to see what's new at Bayshore."

That's good news for Bayshore. I think Mayfair is going to lose that exclusive feel to it. When that happens, people will no longer see any need to go to the mall with all the "trouble". This is probably just the first of several high quality stores to open up at the mall. As more come in, I think Mayfair will decline.

I wouldnt go so far as to say J Crew or Payless shoes are high quality stores. Hell, I'd be tempted to say that bayshore could be doing a lot more to attract high quality retail. Quality upscale retail is one thing thats really lackin in SE Wisconsin's retail market. I, for one, feel left out.

I've always thought of J Crew as upscale. I agree, Payless is not.
