Re: Do we need rail?

As for routes, this is a good idea to go south. This connects us with something very big and growing. The city has been trying for years to connect up to points west with rail, but people out west have been against it forever. They whine about 'those people' coming into their community, they whine about paying $10 extra a year in taxes, basically they whine about change. Well, it's time for something to happen and the communities to the south have stepped up.

Mr. 276 , what are you talking about?!
Abbot Labs? How are people going to get from the track to their time clock -- unless you can tell me that Abbot provide a shuttle service from the nearest stop? -- probably at Waukegan.
Not one of the proponents of this fiasco has yet to explain - or admit - how this trolly will be funded. Let me help you...MORE TAXES! Just so we can be connected - sort of - to Chicago. We are already connected via Amtrak, I-94 and by air.

One of the things I do like about this is how it will benefit Racine. That city has so much potential.

-Quite large already.
-Very dense at 2,033.7/km² (5,267.6/mi²).
-Its has a lakefront and a dense riverfront--much like Milwaukee and Chicago.
-Diverse population.
-Interesting and seemingly healthy downtown.
-Interesting architecture--such as the famous Johnson Wax Building by Frank Lloyd Wright.
-Pretty slick little art museum and vibrant art scene from what I hear.
-Great waterfront area. A huge amenity as we have seen in Milwaukee and Chicago.
-Condo development such as Pointe Blue.
Image
-Proximity to both Chicago and Milwaukee--as well as the O' Hare and Mitchell.

Chicagolanders are buying up riverfront and lakefront property in Milwaukee--many of them commuting to Northern IL. Racine, with its similar amenities to Milwaukee/Chicago and probally lower cost---might be attractive to many in the region. A commuter rail ride to Kenosha would be nothing--and from there--any Metra/CTA stations would be easily accessable.

Racine already is one of the greatest cities in Wisconsin--it along with Kenosha could be kick ass though with a commuter rail line. I think this line would be much more of a benefit to these two cities than it would for Milwaukee.

I also do not like the idea of stations at Somers and Caledonia. Eliminate these two stops and you have a quicker commute between the more important stops.

Amtrak is popular and all--but it doesnt serve most of the region. It is absolutely wonderful for travelling between downtown Milwaukee and Chicago. An hour from what I hear--which will be even more popular when construction begins on 94 towards the Illinois state line. This will have other uses--connecting the suburbs and cities between MKE-CHI.

I am no fan of taxes--but we need to get on this commuter rail thing eventually. I dont think Milwaukee needs a rail line serving the city though as many on SSC seem to think.

BTW..Abbot Labs is going to build in Pleasant Praire. I dont know if there is a Metra stop there.

Yes, but how many taxes can we live with before Wisconsin prices itself out of the market for livability?
Let's see...on Feb. 13 we'll hear about an opportunity for us to "invest" (what a cute, little word to mean SPEND) in the rudderless (and more than a bit corrupt) UW System, education, health care for everybody within a gazillion light years from Wisconsin, education, illegal aliens' rights, education, ethanol (a big effing UGH!), light rail, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on...oh, did I mention education? I'm sure it has nothing to do with being in bed with WEAC. (without expecting any real accountability). At the current rate of taxation and proposed taxation on business, we won't have to worry about rail because there won't be any businesses left in the state. It is not a healthy business climate, and getting worse.

There was a report out just last month that indicated 2/3 of Wisconsin companies pay ZERO income tax... Sounds like a horrible business climate to me.

In regards to abbott labs, I'm using them as an example. The train can pull the two regions together, enabling more of these types of businesses moving into the area.

Now, you seem to be so anti-tax. What about freeways? Do you think that we should have open road tolling here? How about congestion charging?

You just sound like one of those wonderful anti-everything types that hold this region back. Stay in your little sandbox in Waukesha and let your wonderful ideas run wild there.

I agree with him in that Wisconsin is a tax hell. There is no getting around that. $13 a day tax for rental cars is a huge figure. That idiot Doyle is going to make cigarettes more expensive than crack cocaine with his insane taxes on that. Milwaukee property taxes are also expensive--despite anything you can bring up.

Now, I really have no problem paying a sales tax that would go to things like Miller Park, a new Bucks arena, transit, investment in the parks, etc. I dont care for my fellow conservatives sitting there and bitching about that endlessly. Not everything can be privately financed--some of us DO want cool stuff in our cities. Taxing to build Miller Park, commuter rail, etc. will probally over time warrant that tax.

Jesse, I appreciate your excitability and big vision-thinking, but you need to also be reasonable, man! You resemble a certain Wisconsin Gov. who likes to announce dozens of new opportunities (TAXES) but offers no solution for funding. We'll see what happens on Feb. 13 when his plan is announced. Just be ready to assume the position my eager friend.

Yes! Milwaukee needs both its own light rail system and to be connected to Chicago via its Metra system.
People's love affair with their cars is so yesterday. And our bus system is not that great.
Increased density is served well by light rail. And a connection to the Metra system will increase the number of Chicagoans that will travel here and spend their money!
It is worth what ever financing plan they devise.
