Re: Milwaukee wishlist and fantasies.

- great transit system, including high-speed rail to chicago and madison.

- decent downtown retail. doesn't even have to be that great, but some of the basics: gap, h&m, kohl's, etc.

- a downtown movie theater.

- a division 1 college football team.

- major mixed-use development in the parking lots between the Third Ward and Summerfest.

- a few "magnet" schools that would draw families to the city.

- a band from milwaukee to have some great national success...would really do a lot to lift our confidence.

- a local start-up that invents an amazing product or technology that makes it grow into a Fortune 500 company.

^I think thats a good point about the band. Milwaukee needs some people to give it some props and recognition. From what I hear--we get some of it in Europe--but not in the U.S I dont know if any of you read that Shepard Express article about that rapper/EMT from Milwaukee--who was unknown to most here but had huge concerts in Germany. One thing this city needs to do is celebrate its local musicians--rather than the shitty big acts at Summerfest. I wish we would have a large music festival with all local acts.

While not a band, I think Dwayne Wade has done a bit of this. This guy is one of the greatest basketball players and he is connected to Milwaukee.

-I also would love to see a Div. 1 college football team here. Why couldnt UWM get a bigger program? Boise State, Iowa State, Louisville, Cincinatti, Oregon State, and even the great USC have similiar enrollment to UWM.

The idea of a college football stadium in Milwaukee is very, very enticing. The students there greatly want a team. I dont see problems filling up a stadium. And the rivarly with UW would be wonderful. Whats the problem though?

The problem is the UW system itself. The board of regents would never let that fly. God forbid any state school tries to "replicate" madison. No regent support = no funding = no football emoticon

^I never figured it was that bad, but I can see it happening. UWM is a major school that does not seem like one. A 25-30,000 enrollment is pretty sizeable and many schools with equal or less than that have Div. 1 athletics.

I cant see how a Div. 1 team in Milwaukee would hurt Madison. This whole state loves the Badgers and would most definely root against a team from Milwaukee. There is no room at all for contruction of a stadium around UWM--any suggestions?

well, an MLS stadium should also be able to work as a college football stadium if a team were ever started.

Well UWM is a division 1 school, but just no football or hockey teams, among a few others. It's really all about funding and necessary space. The east side is far too dense to sport a football stadium, let alone one big campus, as opposed to various parts of the campus being spread all over town.

The problem is there are far too many people on the Board of Regents that fear the very idea of any school approaching to stature of Madison, and a football team would apparently put UWMs foot in the 'all-star collegiate" door. This is part of the reason UWM isnt as large of a research school as it could be, as well as why it's missing so many elements that most schools, even smaller ones have. UWMs film, architecture and nursing schools are all highly rated, but everything else is average partly due to lack of support and funding from the Board of Regents.

Bless Carlos Santiago for trying, but he doesnt have the support needed from other UW system leaders around the state. There's a clear bias towards Madison and that's why you'll always see a good share of the UW funding money go towards improvements on their already excellent school. It's kind of sad really. :/

ah, how could I forget about the Panthers b-ball team!

Yeah, thats real shitty regarding the Wisconsin
Board of Regents. For such intelligent people--they cant even see our neighbors school systems? Iowa and Michigan have in no way lost their prestige to Iowa State and Michigan St. Just another example in my opinion about these jackasses we pay for not doing its best for the Milwaukee metro region. A divison 1 football program would be huge for the image of the school. The unfortunate fact is that people in this country equate sports to being a major school. UWM is a school of 30,000---10,000 less than the great UW Madison.
